Make a Journal Cover from The Bark of a Paper Tree

This is the cover to the Mixed Media South of France Journal.

The cover of the journal is made from the bark of a paper tree. I started by taking apart a journal that I liked the pages inside, but not so much the front cover.

The original cover was used as a template for the bark. It is super easy to cut with scissors.

Tissue paper and Mod Podge are used to create texture  for the background.  I used the Tim Holtz Distress spray stains to add the color.  I didn’t really spray the stain on, mostly painted it on and used the mini inks after it dried on top of the tissue paper.

I used Liquitex to varnish the bark and it helped to keep the loose pieces from coming off of the cover. Love this product – love it, love it love it!!! I used the Matte finish, but recently bought the gloss finish for future projects.  https://www.michaels.com/liquitex-matte-varnish/D016909S.html    (Definitely use your coupon on this one!)

The Keys and locket was from Tim Holtz ideology collection – love them – all of them!

But I think the Sculpey Liquid clay strap hinges were my favorite.
